Time: 2:00 PM – 3:30 PM

Spring weekends are made for seaside escapes and cultural indulgence—and this May, Ocean House invites art lovers, literary enthusiasts, and curious minds alike to a one-of-a-kind event celebrating the timeless work of Ludwig Bemelmans.

Join us on Saturday, May 3, for a charming afternoon in the elegant Seaside Ballroom, where the enchanting world of Bemelmans comes to life. This special program, led by Hilary Pierce, President of the Art Collector’s Athenaeum and curator of the Bemelmans Gallery at Ocean House, offers a rare opportunity to explore the largest permanent, private collection of Bemelmans’ work on public display in North America.

Hilary will guide guests through the life and legacy of this whimsical illustrator and author—best known for the beloved Madeline series—offering insights into his artistry, adventures, and fascinating connection to the hospitality world. Attendees will also get a first look at select pieces never before seen by the public.

Your ticket includes not only access to this intimate discussion but also a selection of fine wine and passed hors d’oeuvres, adding a delightful culinary touch to the afternoon.

Who Was Ludwig Bemelmans?

More than just the man behind Madeline, Ludwig Bemelmans was a storyteller, hotelier, and artist who captured the spirit of travel and the elegance of a bygone era. Born in Austria and raised in hotels, he immigrated to New York at age 16 and started his American journey as a busboy at the famed Ritz Hotel. He eventually became a banquet manager, all the while sketching scenes from the vibrant world of dining, hospitality, and city life.

His artistic legacy extends beyond the page, immortalized in places like Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle Hotel in New York City—and now, lovingly preserved at Ocean House in Rhode Island.

Whether you're a longtime admirer or new to Bemelmans’ world, this event promises an enriching blend of culture, history, and coastal charm.
