Seal Days at Weekapaug Inn

From Ocean House and Weekapaug Inn:

In the cold November waters of Quonochontaug salt pond, which can be seen from Weekapaug Inn, seals come to visit us. Our marine friends will usually stay in the area until April, but early November is the best time to see these wonderful harbor and gray seals from our boats on the water.

Our naturalist and captain will be chartering boat excursions hourly from: 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Guest will be given a coupon on board the boat for our Seal Day Special! In our Garden Room, participants will get a mug of our amazing chowder half-priced or free when they purchase a meal.

Purchase your tickets here.

Weekapaug Inn is a historic inn at 25 Spray Rock Road in Westerly, Rhode Island. In 1899, Phebe and Frederick C. Buffum built the original Weekapaug Inn on a strip of land between the Quonochontaug Pond and the Atlantic Ocean in the community of Weekapaug, Rhode Island. It was destroyed by the New England Hurricane of 1938, but they rebuilt it the following year. The new structure was situated across the pond from the original site, and it reopened in 1939.

Quonochontaug Pond is the deepest and most saline of the salt ponds. It is connected directly to the sea by a breachway that was stabilized with rock jetties by the US Army Corps of Engineers in the 1950s. And, as in the other ponds, sand eroding from the ocean side of the barrier beach is transported through the breachway into the pond where it settles and creates expanding shoals. In contrast to the other ponds, however, much of its western barrier beach remains in a protected, undeveloped state even though it is privately owned.

Often referred to by locals as "Quonnie Pond", or "Quonnie",[1] the lagoon is bounded on the south by coastal beaches, with a narrow breach way, created by the Army Corps of Engineers in the 1950s, providing access to Block Island Sound, and the Atlantic Ocean. The westernmost side of Quonnie is the site of the Weekapaug Inn, whose restaurants overlook the lagoon.
