The Ocean Race 1973 SLU

The Ocean Race 1973 SLU is a Spanish company led by Richard Brisius, Johan Salén and Jan Litborn. In 2018, it became the new owner of The Ocean Race.

As a successor company to Atlant Ocean Racing, it has taken over the Volvo Ocean Race from Volvo Group and Volvo Cars, the co-owners of the event for the past 20 years.

Atlant Ocean Racing was created in 1998 by Johan Salén and Richard Brisius both of whom share a long history in professional sailing as well as the management of professional sailing projects.

“The history of this race is inspiring and the future is very promising,” said Brisius. “The Ocean Race is about people and I am humbled by the prospects to serve some of the finest athletes and sport professionals in this world as well as leading partners to the race and host cities.”

“Looking forward, we are determined that the race will go from strength to strength as a sustainable premier international sporting event,” said Salén.

Racing With Purpose

Nature has been integral to The Ocean Race since we first set sail in 1973. It's at the heart of what we do - the race track that we compete on and the wind that powers our boats - but it is deteriorating fast.

We're seeing firsthand the devastating impact of pollution, climate change and industrial overfishing on our ocean. At the same time we have a greater understanding of how important our seas are, not just to the sport we love, but in regulating our climate and providing us with food, jobs and the air we breathe.

It's time to act, which is why we are harnessing the determination and ambition of our round-the-world race and the unifying power of sport, to inspire change. We are Racing with Purpose, working with 11th Hour Racing, Premier Partner of The Ocean Race and Founding Partner of our sustainability programme, and many others to go far beyond just being a responsible sports event organizer.

We are in a decade of action, where there needs to be major changes to how we treat the planet, if we are to reach critical targets by 2030. At The Ocean Race we believe that we have the platform to educate, inspire and accelerate action for our blue planet at this critical time in history.

We are using our global platform to inspire all those that we can reach to take action to help the ocean. This includes the sailing community, wider sports industry, businesses, host cities, governments, children, fans and many more.
