For one weekend a year, a Rhode Island coastline you already know by heart turns into somewhere else entirely, and if you have never planned your August around it, this is the year to start. The Black Ships Festival takes over Newport and Bristol from August 14 to 16, and it is exactly the kind of local moment that reminds us why people fall in love with this stretch of coast in the first place.
In 1853, Commodore Matthew Perry sailed a fleet of four imposing ships into Japanese waters, opening two centuries of isolation and beginning a friendship between the United States and Japan that has now lasted more than 170 years. Perry called Newport home, and this city has spent decades honoring that legacy with a festival that draws diplomats, neighbors, and curious visitors alike.
This is not a distant history lesson. It plays out a short drive from wherever you live in Newport or Narragansett, which is part of what makes owning a piece of this coastline so special.
The festival unfolds across several unforgettable stops.
Newport and Narragansett are full of these weekends, the kind that turn a Saturday into a memory. A free family festival by the water in Bristol. A black tie evening inside one of the most photographed mansions on the Cliff Walk. A sail across Narragansett Bay that takes twenty minutes to plan and a lifetime to forget.
This is the everyday texture of life on this coast, and it is exactly what we love helping our clients step into, whether that means a cottage a few blocks from Independence Park or a home with a view of the very bay the Aurora sails through. Newport does not just look beautiful in photos. It lives beautifully, weekend after weekend, and this one is a perfect reminder why.
If a weekend like this makes you want to know what it would feel like to call this coastline home, we would love to show you around.
