The Art of Ceramics: Building Strong Forms

Looking to expand your creative skills this season? If you've been curious about ceramics or want to deepen your existing handbuilding and wheel-throwing abilities, Newport Art Museum's "Building Strong Forms" class might be exactly what you're looking for.

What You'll Create

This six-week intermediate ceramics class runs Wednesdays from May 20 through June 24, 2026, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. Under the guidance of teaching artist Charlene Carpenzano, you'll explore the intersection of form, surface, and function while developing your unique artistic voice.

The curriculum is thoughtfully structured to balance focused instruction with creative freedom. "Every other week, students will receive a new prompt or focused demonstration to spark ideas, followed by a class dedicated to explore, problem-solve, and build independently." This approach helps you think critically about your work while pushing past creative boundaries.

What to Expect

Week five focuses specifically on glazing techniques and surface finishes—those special touches that make ceramic pieces truly shine. By week six, you'll participate in a supportive group critique where you can share your work with fellow artists and complete any finishing glazes.
